Mooresville, North Carolina, or Mooresville, is a city in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, just north of Charlotte. Mooresville is located adjacent to Lake Norman, North Carolina’s largest man-made lake.
Mooresville, sometimes known as “Race City USA,” is the largest city in Iredell County. The Race City USA moniker is due to the town’s 60+ NASCAR-related industries and enterprises. Mooresville is home to two NASCAR teams and an IndyCar racing team.
Mooresville’s population has exploded in the previous two decades, thanks to Lake Norman and its proximity to Charlotte. Since 2000, the population has more than doubled. In the United States Census of 1790, Iredell County had a population of 5,430 people. In 2010, Iredell County had a population of 159,437 people. The 2020 United States Censes calculated the population at 186,693. Mooresville had a population of 508 people in the 1880 United States Census. Mooresville had 32,711 residents in the 2010 US Census. Mooresville’s population was 50,193 per the 2020 United States Census. This is 53.44% increase in population between 2010 and 2020. Mooresville had a population of 9,317 per the 1990 United States Census. In thirty years, 1990 to 2020, Mooresville population increased by 40,876 citizens or by 439%.
A brief Overview of Mooresville
The railroad took right of way through the land of John Franklin Moore in 1856, and the city of Mooresville was born. Moore built a depot on his property in 1871 and invited people to settle in the area surrounding his depot. Moore’s Siding was the name given to the location by the . Mooresville was legally named after John Franklin Moore, who founded the town in 1873. Some of the brick buildings on what is now known as Main Street were erected by Moore himself. In 1883, a new train depot was built, as well as new railway lines. Mooresville grew as a result of the railroad’s expansion. Textile production grew in importance in the early 1900s, eventually becoming the town’s most important industry. As textile manufacturing began to decline in the latter part of the 20th century, NASCAR and Lake Norman became the main economic drivers of Mooresville’s economy. The textile sector deterioration can be traced to cheaper foreign textiles being imported and the North American Free Trade Agreement that came into effect in the 1990s.
Mooresville’s economy was founded on agriculture, particularly cotton, and transportation, primarily the railroad in the 1800s. Textile manufacturing became a major economic force in the late 1800s on into the 1970s when it began to decline. With the demise of the textile sector, Lake Norman became a key economic driver with the development and building of the Cowans Ford Dam from 1959 to 1964. Mooresville grew into a popular vacation spot. Beginning in the 1970s, Mooresville became known as a bedroom community for Charlotte. NASCAR teams and supporting enterprises opened shop in Mooresville in the 1980s and 1990s.
Mooresville’s largest employers: Lowe’s Companies, Inc. employs over 4,000 people in Mooresville, whereas Lake Norman Regional Medical Center employs 775, NGK Ceramics USA employs 700, and Team Penske employs 400.
The Mooresville City School System has an outstanding reputation and has an outstanding primary and secondary education curriculum in the region. Mitchell Community College has a satellite campus in Mooresville to their main campus in Statesville.

Mooresville Arts – Mooresville Arts was found in 1955, and houses and displays art of all types. They are located in the historic former train depot in downtown Mooresville. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Each month a new art exhibit is put on display, along with art classes and workshops to support art appreciation in the community. North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame – The North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame or NCARHOF is a museum devoted to exhibiting and promoting all types of racing activities from drag racing to stock car racing. The Hall of Fame Inductees represent some of the greatest influences in Motorsports. The exhibits take museum visitors through the history and evolution of racing in North Carolina. The museum is home to more than forty automobiles that represent and re-create some of racing’s greatest moments. The Lazy 5 Ranch – The Lazy 5 Ranch is a drive-through safari animal habitat where zoo visitors can see exotic animals from six continents. The goal of the Lazy 5 Ranch is to educate zoo visitors on exotic animals in a fun and entertaining way in their natural habitat. The Lazy 5 Ranch helps the recovery of several endangered species including the Grevy Zebra, Scimitar Horned Oryx, and Ring-tailed Lemur.
Wagon rides and animal petting facilities are available. The ranch is inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Lazy 5 Ranch works closely with USDA inspectors on the animals’ welfare and care.
